Student Success

We encourage our alumni and supporters to make waves by supporting our campaign to provide resources and high impact learning experiences that are the key ingredients for student success.

ADMISSIONS SCHOLARSHIPS

FACT: Over 44 million Americans currently owe $1.5 trillion in student loan debt. (Ouch. That’s roughly $620 billion more than the total US credit card debt.)

Western is a terrific educational value with tuition at $6,500 per year. But it isn’t cheap considering living costs which raise the total annual expense to more than $20,000. Driving up the nation’s student loan debt doesn’t make sense. Offering students multi-year scholarships to offset the cost of education does. Need-based scholarships open the university door for aspiring students, keep them from checking out before they achieve their degree, and help them just say no to staggering debt.

FACT: College graduation rates for low-income and minority students are 20 percentage points lower than the rest of the population. (Not kidding. We think it is a moral imperative to change that.)

College completion rates vary significantly along socio-economic lines.  Historically marginalized communities have always suffered the most. Researchers call that the Opportunity Gap. We intend to change history by closing the gap. President’s scholarships are awesome four-year awards to high-achieving students from underserved populations who desire to Make Waves at Western…and beyond.

STUDY ABROAD EXPERIENCES

FACT: Globalization is changing how we live and work, and employers are increasingly looking for skilled workers who have cross-cultural experience and understanding. (Yep. We are definitely not in Kansas anymore.)

As the world rapidly becomes more globalized, employers are looking for employees with a both hard and soft skills to keep pace with the world. Consider the changing dynamics: The E7 countries (China, India, Brazil, Russia, Indonesia, Mexico, Turkey) are rapidly gaining on G7 countries (the U.S., UK, France, Germany, Italy, Canada, Japan) when measured by GDP. As things get more globally competitive, knowledge and experience is key. Studying abroad for a few weeks, or a full quarter, provides experiential learning situations that teach students to adapt to changing circumstances while learning in cross-cultural settings. They say the great ones learn to adjust. We think that’s true.

STUDENT RESEARCH AND CREATIVE OPPORTUNITIES

FACT: Summer research experiences enhance intellectual skills like inquiry and analysis, reading and understanding primary literature, communication, and teamwork. (Check. And it sure beats working at the gas station.)

Western undergraduates have research opportunities that just aren’t available to students at the big schools. Our students have the chance to immerse themselves in their field of study while working alongside their faculty principal investigator, and other students. This kind of summer work is a huge jumpstart on an eventual career, or admission to graduate school. Supporting student research allows us to pay a stipend to students for the hours they spend researching, usually over a ten week period. It’s the best summer job there is.
