Student Ambassador Spotlight: Connor Haines

Meet Connor Haines, a Computer Science major in his second year at WWU. In his free time, Connor enjoys hiking the arboretum. Connors professional goal is to work in the Cybersecurity field, this would mean getting a master's in Cybersecurity after he finishes his bachelor’s degree.

My name is Connor. I am a sophomore here at Western. I am majoring in Computer Science and expect to graduate in 2027.

Why did you choose Western?
I chose Western because I’m from Bellingham and know Western has an amazing community. In addition, a lot of my close friends from high school are going here and it's great to stay connected.

What do you like about Western?
I love Western’s location, the arboretum is beautiful, and love to go on hikes, especially in the fall and spring. The community at Western is also very laid back and relaxed which I appreciate.

How is your student ambassador experience? What are your duties?
My student ambassador experience has been great. All of the student ambassadors have been very welcoming, and I always feel like I have support when I need it. My duties primarily focus on making the donors feel welcome in whatever ways I can.

Which professors do you work with? What is your favorite class? If not in a declared major yet, what is your area of interest?
I have worked with a lot of professors within the computer science department. One of my favorites was my CS 247 professor, Aran Clawson. Although his class was difficult, I feel like I learned more in his class than in any other class I’ve taken.

Are you the beneficiary of philanthropy at Western (scholarship, grant, travel experience, etc)? If so, how has that made a difference for you?  If not, are any of your friends or classmates, and if so, what impact has it had on them?
In my first year at Western, I was the beneficiary of the Carol Radke scholarship. Not only did this help pay for my tuition here at Western, but it also led to me getting this job. When I was at the scholarship dinner I was introduced to Nicole and learned about this position, resulting in my working as an ambassador the next year.

What would you like to say to a someone who has made a gift to support Western students and programs?
I would thank them for allowing students who may not otherwise have the opportunity to attend this great school to continue their education.

What do you do when you aren’t in class?
When I’m out of class I work on homework, hang out with friends, and go on hikes in the arb.

Where is your happy place either on campus or in Bellingham?
Larrabee State Park is a beautiful park just outside of Bellingham. When you go at low tide you can see amazing sea creatures in the tide pools, and if you look between some rocks you may even spot a starfish.

What are your professional dreams and goals?  Where could you see yourself in five years?
My goal is to work in the Cybersecurity field, this would mean getting a master's in Cybersecurity after I finish my major. Therefore, in five years I hope to be finishing up my master's program.
