A Legacy of Service, Education, and Gratitude: Rafael Remis

Washington University alumnus and military veteran Rafael I. Remis passed away earlier this year in Bellingham, bringing to a close a life defined by service, resilience, and a lifelong commitment to learning. Representatives from Western Washington University attended his military funeral at Tahoma National Cemetery last week, paying tribute to a remarkable alumnus whose generosity will continue creating opportunities for Western students for generations to come.

Rafael's life was anything but ordinary. The son of a Cuban immigrant father and a Puerto Rican mother, he began a remarkable military career at just 17 years old. Over the decades that followed, he proudly served in four branches of the U.S. military: the Marine Corps, Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard, an accomplishment few service members can claim. His assignments took him to Korea, Japan, England, and military installations across the United States, experiences that reflected his deep sense of duty and commitment to service.

Following his military career, Rafael continued his pursuit of education, attending several colleges before earning his degree from Western Washington University. He eventually settled in Bellingham, where he spent his retirement reading, painting, and reflecting on a life filled with extraordinary experiences. He also chronicled those experiences in his self-published memoir, Remis: An Autobiography. Though he lived quietly, those who knew him remember a man of perseverance, discipline, and thoughtful generosity.

That generosity will continue to make a difference for generations of students. Through his estate, Rafael established the Remis Scholarship Endowment Fund, creating a permanent endowment that will provide scholarships in perpetuity for incoming female students in honor of his late mother. His gift ensures that future students will continue to find opportunities at Western because of his foresight and generosity.

Rafael Remis devoted his life to serving others, first through military service, then through his commitment to education, and ultimately through a gift that will continue opening doors for future Western students. Though his remarkable journey has come to an end, his legacy will live on through the students whose lives will be changed because he chose to invest in their future.
