Learn about how Western is working to increase the sustainability of our food systems, including our efforts to increase food security, reduce food waste, provide food education, and expand the number of climate-friendly, healthy, and affordable food options on campus. Join Western’s Basic Needs Hub, the Outback Farm, Chartwells, and the Sustainability Engagement Institute to hear about our successes and challenges in addressing these topics.

Gina Ebbeling, Presenter
Gina Ebbeling, she/her, is the Basic Needs Resource Navigator at Western. She works with students facing basic needs insecurities, connecting them to resources and providing support. Gina also manages the WHOLE pantry located in the Viking Union. Prior to working at Western, Gina worked in various roles within higher education and is a life coach.

Michael Sledge, Presenter
Michael is responsible for providing operational leadership, strategic vision, and direction for the offices of Student Life, Basic Needs, Student Engagement, and Off-Campus Living. Learn more about Michael.

Terri Kempton ('98), Presenter
Terri Kempton (she/her) blends experience with organic and biodynamic farming together with conservation biology and permaculture design. She manages the Outback staff, oversees farm logistics, and handles the administrative pieces of the farm. Terri is also an adjunct faculty member of Fairhaven College and teaches classes on food, farming, ecogastronomy, agroecology, and community building. Paul Wilson-Scott, Presenter
Paul is Chartwells at WWU’s Resident District Manager, which provides service to Western campus with catering, several retail cafés and markets, and three residential dining venues.

Lindsey MacDonald, Presenter
Lindsey MacDonald is the Associate Director at Western Washington University’s Sustainability Engagement Institute where she administers a Climate Leadership Certificate program, teaches sustainability courses, and supports the university in transitioning to a more sustainable campus, including in our food systems. She is passionate about engaging students in real-world, hands-in-the-soil work to address the climate crisis. Lindsey holds a Master of Science in Conservation Ecology from the University of Michigan.

Kate Beck, Moderator
Kate coordinates the implementation of Western's Sustainability Action Plan, reports on Western's sustainability progress, brings people together to work towards Western's sustainability goals. Prior to working at Western, Kate worked as a regional planner and policy researcher in public utilities and transportation. Kate has a Masters in City Planning and Masters in Public Health from UC Berkeley.
