Hydrogen has a long history of boom-and-bust cycles. This talk will explore what’s driving the latest hydrogen hype and assess how much of it is justified based on real-world use cases and competing decarbonization technologies. We’ll examine hydrogen’s role in the energy transition by focusing on where it is essential, where it might work under the right conditions, and where it is an inefficient distraction. The goal is to cut through the hype and focus on pragmatic decarbonization—prioritizing hydrogen where it is truly needed.

Kelly Carpenter, PhD, Speaker
Kelly Carpenter is an electrochemical engineer specializing in green hydrogen, electrolyzer design, and decarbonization strategies. With extensive experience in hydrogen production, industrial applications, and system-level energy solutions, she has worked on advancing hydrogen technologies for real-world deployment. Her expertise spans both the technical and economic challenges of hydrogen adoption in the global energy transition. In this talk, she will explore pragmatic use cases for hydrogen, its limitations compared to direct electrification, and strategies for decarbonizing global energy systems. Kelly holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from the University of Washington.
