China’s solar energy capacity is outpacing that of the rest of the world…combined. The same can be said for its hydropower capacity. During the time of this presentation, China will install nearly 60 MW of solar PV capacity, covering roughly 300 acres. How do we make sense of these mind-boggling numbers, and of their environmental, socioeconomic, and geopolitical implications?

Darrin Magee directs the Institute for Energy Studies at Western Washington University. He is a recognized expert on China’s hydropower sector and on water and energy issues in East Asia. He recently served as an advisor in the US State Department thanks to a Science and Technology Policy Fellowship from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Prior to joining Western in 2023, Darrin was a professor of Environmental Studies and Asian Studies at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY.
